Deborah is a Registered Nurse and has a PhD in Health Policy and Management from University of Toronto (2002), where she specialized in organizational behaviour and performance measurement. During her post-doctoral fellowship in the Faculty of Nursing at U of T, she started to focus her work in the area of patient safety. Deborah joined the Queen’s University School of Nursing in July 2013, and prior to that she was on faculty at York University’s School of Nursing for nine years. Her research focuses on patient safety, from a variety of perspectives, including safety competencies, simulation and teamwork, and best practices in acute elder care. Currently, she holds an Associated Medical Services Phoenix Fellowship and the Margaret B Vogan Fellowship from Queen’s University School of Nursing to support her work on courage and compassion in nursing.
