She is a registered nurse with experience in critical care, quality and patient safety, process improvement and, most recently, as clinical nurse specialist in palliative home care.

Carmel’s research interests revolve around health services outcomes and evaluation for patients with frailty and critical illness. Currently she is focused on construction of an electronic frailty index to screen older patients referred for cardiac surgery. She will also look at the health care costs associated with surgery in this population. The broad aim of her research is to preserve functional autonomy after cardiac surgery in our most vulnerable patients.
