Dr. John Muscedere speaking at Taming of the Queue 2015 national conference

April 15, 2015

Dr. John Muscedere, CFN Scientific Director, will make a presentation April 16 at 8:30 am at the Taming of the Queue 2015 national conference in Ottawa (Fairmont Château Laurier — Adam Room)

Dr. Muscedere will discuss the prevalence of frail health in Canada and how the healthcare system – and, in particular, evidenced-based frailty screening – needs to evolve to address one of its most significant challenge: the growth in the number of frail elderly Canadians who need more complex health care, yet who need more diverse options on the care they receive.

Facts:

  • The number of Canadians living 85+ years is growing dramatically, but so is the prevalence of multiple and chronic health conditions they experience (“frailty”).
  • Frail elderly Canadians are vulnerable – at high risk of adverse health outcomes and increased use of community resources, hospitals and long-term care facilities.
  •  Seniors account for 14% of Canada’s population, but occupy 85% of acute care beds in hospitals; 40% of patients in hospital ICUs are 70+ years of age.
