John trained at the Middlesex Hospital, University of London. He was appointed as a consultant geriatrician in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1986. Research funding is predominantly through the NIHR and encompasses programme in intermediate care service evaluation, stroke care, dementia, delirium, care home medicine and frailty.
He has held previous positions with the British Geriatrics Society, Department of Health and NICE and has worked on two national audit projects. In 2009 John was awarded the Lady Illingworth prize for outstanding contributions to services for older people.
